Senator The Hon Mitch Fifield

Vale John Clarke

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mr John Clarke and extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

John was a master of satire and an accomplished actor. His performance in Death in Brunswick was a favourite.

Born in New Zealand, his talent was evident from early on through his iconic character Fred Dagg.

Through Clarke and Dawe, he provided decades of acute political insights through parody.

Others will remember him for his celebrated television mockumentary about the Sydney Organising Committee for the 2000 Olympics, The Games, which he co-wrote and starred in. He also published numerous books.

Widely recognised by his peers, John was honoured for his contribution to Australian television in 2008 when he was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame.

John Clarke leaves behind a legacy of thought-provoking humour and a record of significant creative accomplishments. His humility, intelligence and wit will be sorely missed.
