The Turnbull Government’s National Broadband Network (NBN) is set to deliver a business and digital jobs boom in the Mount Gambier region, according to new research released by NBN Co Limited (nbn) today.
The Mount Gambier Business Growth Opportunities report was compiled by the Regional Australia Institute and draws on the latest research from AlphaBeta’s study into the national economic and social impact of the NBN.
Speaking in Mount Gambier, Minister for Communications Senator Mitch Fifield, said the findings show that the Government’s NBN rollout is delivering real benefits to Mount Gambier and surrounding areas.
“This new report confirms that the Government’s NBN is opening the door to new business opportunities and jobs in the region,” Minister Fifield said.
“Thanks to our faster and more affordable rollout, the NBN is now complete in Mount Gambier and on track to be completed nationally by 2020. This is expected to support over 700 new businesses and create up to 2370 new digital jobs in the Mount Gambier area.”
Minister for Small and Family Business, the Hon Craig Laundy MP, said the NBN provides a fantastic opportunity for businesses across Australia to enhance their business practices and reach customers in new ways.
“One of the biggest challenges facing small and family business in Australia is the need for greater collaboration,” he said.
“The NBN really is a breakthrough for many firms in rural and regional Australia, opening up new ways to share ideas and innovations to help our economy grow.”
Member for Barker, Mr Tony Pasin, said Mount Gambier’s strong workforce means it is well placed to take advantage of the digital jobs revolution and encouraged local businesses to get connected and start experiencing the benefits for themselves.
“As the States second largest city its been so important that Mount Gambier be able to access fast and reliable internet.
“Businesses in Mount Gambier are able to be more productive as the NBN enables access to new online services like cloud-based accounting software. Students will be able to participate in immersive learning experiences, from their classroom or at home. And mums and dads will be able to take care of everyday tasks like accessing government services or paying bills quickly and easily online.
“In short, it’s a big win for our community both socially and economically,” said Mr Pasin.
The NBN rollout in Mount Gambier is complete with high-speed broadband access a reality for more than 13,000 homes and businesses in the region.
