Partnership delivering state of the art dance studio
3 August 2018
The Turnbull Government has announced a $50,000 contribution to a major project delivering state of the art new premises in North Melbourne for leading Australian contemporary dance company Lucy Guerin Inc.
The funding will match generous private sector support already pledged by Dr Terry Wu, and kick-start an ambitious fundraising campaign to complete the capital works. The $50,000 will enable a professional-grade sprung floor to be installed in the new dance studio space. The facilities will be available for independent dance and movement artists to lease at affordable rates, providing more opportunities for Australian performers.
Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield said this is another fantastic example of philanthropy and government working together to support Australia’s vibrant arts and culture sector.
“The Government is delighted to be one of the partners for this innovative project to help our talented choreographers and dancers reach their full potential. The local contemporary dance sector attracts international attention for its unique repertoire. The professional-grade sprung floor is an essential tool for the safety of the dancers.”
“I applaud the generous contributions of Australia’s philanthropic sector to the arts, in particular the pioneering vision of Dr Terry Wu which will create a deep and lasting impact on our cultural capacity.”
The new premises was purchased by Melbourne philanthropist Dr Wu as an innovative impact investment to provide affordable, fit-for-purpose facilities for Melbourne’s dance practitioners.
It is expected to open in September 2018 following the completion of a fit out with studio spaces, change rooms, showers, a meeting area and kitchen.
Lucy Guerin Inc was established in 2002 to create and tour new dance works, with a focus on challenging and extending the art of contemporary dance.
