Parliamentarians for an Australian Head of State
Mitch is a co-convenor of the cross-party forum ‘Parliamentarians for an Australian Head of State’.
The group aims to maintain awareness of the need for an Australian Head of State and will provide a periodic forum for speakers and auspice an annual ‘Australian Head of State’ lecture.
The group’s objectives are:
1. To provide a non-partisan and cross-party forum for Members and Senators in the Federal Parliament who support change to ensure an Australian as our head of state
2. To play an educative role in relation to the issues involved in putting a referendum to the Australian people
3. To maintain the issue of an Australian head of state on the constitutional agenda
During the 2007 election, 73.2 per cent of candidates from all parties described themselves as favouring an Australian republic (Australian Candidate study 2007, Australian National University)
As Parliament needs to approve a referendum bill to enable the public to vote on change to Australia’s constitution, it is important to have a forum for parliamentarians to participate. Parliamentarians can and should play a key role in promoting ongoing debate and momentum on this important issue.
