EVANS CONTRADICTS RUDD ON CARBON COSTS

Senator Chris Evans, Leader of the Government in the Senate, today contradicted the Prime Minister on the cost to taxpayers from Labor’s ETS.

In an interview with the Today program on Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister stated that "there is a one-off adjustment to the price."

In response to questions asked by Senator Fifield in Question Time today, Senator Evans contradicted the Prime Minister and conceded that the impact of Labor’s ETS on prices wouldn’t be a one off event and would vary with changes to the carbon price.

Senator Evans admitted that there would be an “annual review of its household assistance package.”

If the impact was one-off, as the Prime Minister claimed, an annual review would be unnecessary. As a matter of logic, prices of basic goods would vary with changes to the price of carbon permits.

If the Prime Minister doesn’t understand his own scheme how can he expect Australians to understand it, let alone support it?
