The Labor/Greens Alliance – an incompetent, unstable government
After the longest election, Australia has been left with a government that although having constitutional and parliamentary legitimacy lacks electoral and moral authority.
The election saw Australians resoundingly reject Labor’s culture of spin and machine politics. The Coalition received almost 700,000 more primary votes than Labor. We won more seats. Even one independent admitted that a Labor government was less preferred by Australians than a Coalition government.
Forming a government in a hung parliament should be about stability. But Labor were chronically divided and unstable when they held a majority. They cannot now promise to provide stable and competent government without one.
Already, Labor is tearing itself apart. National Labor President Anna Bligh has said that the Julia Gillard experiment “failed miserably.” Former Labor President Warren Mundine says Labor is full of poison and former NSW Premier Morris Iemma said ALP National Secretary Karl Bitar and powerbroker Senator Mark Arbib should “pack up and go home.” And at the swearing in of the new Gillard Ministry, Kevin Rudd glared whilst the faceless men and architects of his downfall received their rewards. The Labor Party is a hospital ward of open wounds and bitter scars.
This is not a party ready to deliver stable, competent government for the next three years.
But Labor’s culture of spin and machine politics runs deep. They will do anything and say anything to cling to power. In fact, the quest for power is the only principle the Labor Party holds dear. They are even prepared to form an alliance with the Greens.
A Labor-Greens Alliance means a great big new carbon tax on everything, a mining tax, death duties and cuts to funding for independent schools. Clearly the Greens will be pressuring the Gillard Government to deliver their extreme agenda.
A Labor-Greens Alliance is a dangerous threat to our national interest. It’s disappointing neither Julia Gillard nor Bob Brown came clean about their deal before the election. People may well have voted differently if they knew that a vote for Julia Gillard was a vote for a Labor-Greens government.
Only the Liberal-National Coalition can provide stable, competent government in Australia’s national interest. We will continue to work tirelessly to this end.
